My happiest place on earth. New Orleans. Living there you soak up the grit these natives have. Invincible. Jazz Fest 19 is still ringing in my ears. Not there this year due to vulnerability, but always tuned into WWOZ. Happy Jazz Fest!

It is one of the happiest places on earth for me as well! We can virtually dance to WWOZ together (even with our vulnerabilities), and maybe next year we can be there in person! Here's to hope! Thanks for your wonderful reflections, Barbara, and happy JazzFest!

I love these JazzFest-inspired Morning After Thoughts and reflections about New Orleans and the power of music. Beautifully said, with full knowledge that Covid is still out there. Such a good Stevie Wonder story... I can just picture him singing "Purple Rain" and being so intimate with his large audience. And I'm with you about the Fais Do Do Stage. That's my favorite, and I've seen everyone there from John Hiatt, Rockin' Dopsie, Jean Knight (thank you Donn Young!), and the Mavericks to Rosie Ledet, Steve Earle, and Sarah Jarosz. Let the good times roll, indeed, and thank you Jessica for reminding me of the Wonder that is JazzFest. (And that’s a great Dylan quote, too!)

Thanks for sharing all those memories, and we have SO many! Maybe next year we can go in person, here's hoping to that! When I get to the "N" letter of my "missing" travel adventures portion of Morning After Thoughts, there's going to be a lot to say about NOLA... Thanks for the fabulous details in your comment!

Such a remarkable, intimate experience seeing Stevie Wonder sing through a megaphone to the brave souls toughing out the torrential downpour. I will never forget that moment with you! Life changing indeed! ❤️❤️❤️

Indeed! And the best part is we DID get to see him the next year. <3

I’m here at a Denver area coffeehouse where a friend of mine works as a barista. She is absolutely is obsessed with New Orleans from a trip she took earlier this year. I recommended that she enjoy a night at the infamous jazz club Snug Harbor which she loved. And I gave her a digital gift card to spend at Baldwin Bookstore. She is super freakish and becoming one of my best friends.

I love it! And Snug Harbor is an absolute gem! Frenchman Street is just the best. (Also, my husband and I call each other “the snugs.”) Thank you for sharing this story!

I love the city of New Orleans. Even though I’ve never been to the Jazz & Heritage Festival, your piece transports me there. I shut my eyes and visualize your wonderful descriptions. No place like NOLA…the resilience of the people, music, food, and culture are amazing. One day perhaps I’ll lose my Jazz Fest virginity celebrating with The Snugs.

Here’s to Tony and NOLA 🍷 🎶 🎺 💃 🎭 💚🌻😍

I haven't been to JazzFest since 2017, but is one of my favorite events. I love walking through the gates in the morning, grabbing a sweet potato pone and cafe au lait, and wandering from stage to stage all day long. Reading your newsletter takes me back. Thank you for sharing your experiences this year. So good to know that JazzFest is still happening!

Thank you! I'm so glad it takes you back, and I cannot wait till I can go again. Missing these last few years has been hard, but I am grateful I have decades of memories from New Orleans to remember and share. Maybe next year it will be possible for both of us to JazzFest?!

That would make my year. In fact, it would make the last 5.

Seriously, I hear that loud and clear! <3
