G is for Guanajuato! 041722
Welcome to the seventh installment of (missing) travel adventures in Morning After Thoughts. What's on your mind this morning? Here we go, Day 51!
In the Spring of 2019, Mr. Snugs had a three-day trip flying the friendly skies to Mexico. I’d never been before, and tagged along for this brief adventure to Guanajuato, a central city in the mountains. We quickly learn this is where Mexicans go for their leisure time. This is not a Spring break hotspot. It’s the home of the Mummy Museum (yes, an insanely fucking creepy collection of specimens that mummified naturally), a real life Romeo and Juliet alley (where a father killed his own daughter for holding the hands of her beloved), and lots of traveling through underground tunnels in speeding cars (there was not enough Lorazepam in my bottle for this part). Did we wander the winding and narrow streets by foot, eat the most delicious local foods, and drink it all up in cocktails? Of course!
Apart from the mummies, in many respects it’s a very colorful city. I felt fortunate to be with Mr. Snugs and his all-male flight crew. (It didn’t feel like the safest place on earth.) What specifically made me feel grateful to the crew was the first officer spoke Spanish. I wish my brain could learn a foreign language fluently at this point in my life.
We quite literally stumbled upon a tiny hidden gem, a restaurant called Escarola, where they served the best chilled cucumber and avocado soup, and boozy beverages. It was a sunny afternoon, and the women working led us out back to sit in a multi-level garden through this hole-in-the-wall entrance. These women were then picking the fresh basil and mint in the garden to make our soups and drinks. It was such a teachable moment to watch. One thing here is it all seems like it’s in slow motion, but totally worth it. Would I ever go back? Probably not.
From sex and family drama to travel and hangovers, what's on your mind today? Welcome to a space to reflect light on three things, and please share if you're comfortable doing so.
What an interesting city to visit. Wonderful storytelling…especially stopping at the Mummy Museum. I know it’s not your cup of tea.
The food sounds delicious and love how you find the hidden gems. The chilled cucumber/avocado soup sounds scrumptious with the fresh basil. Farm to table foods.
A heartbreaking story about the Alley of the Kiss and the Mexican Romeo & Juliet.
I can almost taste that chilled cucumber and avocado soup right now from your description and my memories. It was divine. 🥰🥰🥰 And yes, thank goodness for my first officer on that trip. He was a life saver on many occasions through out the day. It was so lovely having you join me on that trip. You have such an adventurous spirit, and that was quite the adventurous day ❤️❤️❤️
