Is This How It Starts? Part II
Reflections from my personal roller coaster entering the world again (sort of) and wondering what makes a best man. What's on your mind today? (Edition #65)
For almost eight years I lived next to Dano in a downtown Northampton apartment complex, and we became quite close. I cried on the days leading up to his wedding this month, thinking it would be too risky for my health to attend. Sweet Dano said months back, “RSVP yes, and if you have to change your mind last minute, I totally get it.” (What a mensch.) Twenty-seven hours before the ceremony my PCP said, “This is not zero risk, but it is low-risk outdoors if you keep your mask on when you can, and social distance as much as possible. You’re double-boosted, and I think you should go and have fun.” My tears disappeared and my optimistic attitude came out of the woodwork. The power of good news, right?
This was my first in-person wedding (hell, major event) in almost three years, and it was a beautiful sunny day. We had spaced out seats for the ceremony, sat at a wonderful table with a close friend, (who in solidarity wore a fancy mask until we were comfortable taking ours off) and made some new pals during the reception. There were no wedding parties, but three speeches were given. I was so honored to share a few memories and a couple of jokes over the mic at Dano’s (and my own) expense, and it went smashingly well. The father of the bride spoke before me, and Amy (Dano’s wife) had her best girlfriend say a few words after me. Did this make me the best man!?
I’m starting to feel slightly more positive about the prospects of a little socializing this summer and letting my incredibly-stifled, extremely-extroverted side breathe a bit. Are you feeling similar vibes?

Your life’s roll coaster these past two years have been a bitch. So glad you were able to enjoy the wedding.
